Which geographic feature encouraged westward movement?

While there are several features that could be chosen to discuss why the westward movement occurred, none are more prominent (in my opinion) than the California Gold rush. People of all types wanted to gain wealth and with the prospect of potentially gaining great fortune, it was very enticing to make the journey westwards regardless of how dangerous it was.
