Learning all the different tones and how to understand them as well as pronounce them properly is VERY important, especially in Mandarin and Cantonese, as one small change in tone changes the meaning of a word/phrase completely. Because of this, one could be saying and understanding the whole language incorrectly because they don’t have the correct meaning.
