He keeps his promise to the King by giving him 1 kiss on the first day, 2 kisses on the second day and 3 kisses on the third day. How does Gawain break his promise? He keeps the magical green girdle because it supposedly protects the wearer from harm and it could come in handy when he faces the Green Knight.
